Picasso Cow (2008)

Richard's report

Our group focus is to show the brighter side of the Gippsland Lakes and what we are throwing away. We have done paintings and we have been researching, making mind maps and spider maps.

We have learnt many things about the farming industry, fishing industry and tourism.

We are trying to tell the same kind of story as The Lorax by Dr Seuss. We need to stop what we are doing before it is too late. We need to know when enough is enough and we need to stop erosion, nutrients and farm animal waste ending up in the Lakes.

 Lakes News Report

Grade six students at Metung Primary School are currently painting a Picasso Cow while researching the health and welfare of the Gippsland lakes, clean water and nutrient management.

The Picasso Cow Program will be introduced in Victorian schools in 2009, but Metung is piloting the project this year. The project is an initiative of Dairy Australia.

In early planning stages the students have developed a theme showing Bancroft Bay and Lake King as 'paradise' on one side of the cow, while the other side paints a picture of the rivers (Mitchell, Tambo and Nicholson) flowing into Lake King, with a theme of 'unless'.

Students have brainstormed ideas from The Lorax by Dr Seuss, in asking what will happen unless we all contribute to environmental responsibilities.

Apart from Internet and newspaper research, students will visit SEAMEC in Lakes Entrance to learn about using fish stocks to reinvigorate river systems.
